The genus Calliophis (Asian coral snakes) is the most basal
group in the family Elapidae (Figueroa et al. 2016; Zheng and
Wiens 2016; Brown et al. 2018; Zaher et al. 2019). These snakes
can be found from India through much of Southeast Asia and are
mostly small, fossorial, and ophiophagous (Brongersma 1948;
Weiting and Tian 2013; Das et al. 2015; Sy and Gonzales 2018).
Most species possess brightly colored tails that are displayed
when threatened and many species also have brightly colored
aposematic stripes (Stuebing et al. 1999; Das 2012). Within the
genus, a distinction is often drawn between the short-glanded
and long-glanded species (Slowinski et al. 2001; Brown et al.
2018). Specifically, three (C. bivirgatus, C. intestinalis, and C.
salitan) of the 14 currently described species possess extraordinarily
elongated venom glands that extend into the body cavity
and range from a quarter to more than a third of the body length
(Bernhard-Meyer 1869; Das et al. 2015; Yang et al. 2016; Uetz et
al. 2018).
