บทคัดย่อ :
Dark evening brown butterfly is the most abundant and wildly spread fruit-feeding
butterfly in Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. We compared
population, direction and distance movement of this butterfly between dry dipterocarp
forest and dry evergreen forest by using Capture-Recapture method. Bait traps with
mixed fermented fish and pineapple were hung at 3 m above ground in 4 directions. In
each direction, 5 traps with 50 m interval were used. We captured, marked, and released
butterflies then recapture them every 2 days after, 3 times in November, 2011. The
estimated butterfly population in dry evergreen forest (130 individuals) was 2 times
higher than those in dry dipterocarp forest (56 individuals). Most butterflies (60-75%)
traveled 50 m from the released points. However, some butterfly can travel up to 300 m
in this study. Majority of dry dipterocarp forest butterflies moved to the West (39%) and
South (30%) but dry evergreen forest butterflies did not show much of directional
orientation. Most butterflies preferred less dense but more tree covered areas to avoid
any flight obstruction and intense sun light that limit their movements and physiology.
