The entire area of the Sakaerat Experiment Station appears to be underlain by sandstones of the Phra Wihan formation of the Khorat group to a maximum thickness of 1,025 metres. It lies conformably on the purplish silt-stone, micaceous sandstone, and conglomerate of the Phu Kadung formation of the same group. The Phu Kadung outcrops about five kilometres south of the towers in a cutting of Route 304. The Phra Wihan formation is overlain conformably by the Phu Phan formation of the Khorat group. A thickness of 22 metres of Phu Phan conglomeratic sand-stone caps Khao Kabut, a hill about seven kilometres north-northeast of the Station. No fossils were found in the Phra Wihan formation in the Sakaerat area. However, Ward and Bunnag (1964) found fossils in Phra Wihan formation along the highway from Udon the Nong Bua Lamphu. These were identified as Jurassic icthyosaur tee the and two peleeypods.
