บทคัดย่อ :
During the last ten years or so, two thoughts, long in the subconscious of scientists concerned with the biology and ecology of lowland tropical rain forest, have surfaced to become the conscious centre of debate and interest. Both have profound implications for our understanding of evolution within tropical environments and for our ability to conserve and manage successfully, not only tropical trees, but also rain forest ecosystems. More-over, both derive from a developing awareness of the biological and ecological significance of species diversity within tropical rain forests, now widely attested to be the richest in species of all forest formations (Poore,1968; Richards, 1969; Baker, 1970; Ashton, 1973). These two areas of speculation have been neatly identified by Ashton (1976a). The first has focused on the evolution of this species diversity; the second on its main-tenance, whether in nature, or, by extension, through direct conservation measures by man.
